Oman's Minister of Foreign Affairs Makes 'Unofficial' Visit to Iran

Reports indicate that Yusuf bin Alawi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman, arrived unofficially in Tehran on Saturday and left the city on Sunday, November 25, after meeting with President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), a political source confirmed the unofficial nature of bin Alawi's visit and stated that he came to discuss bilateral issues and regional conditions, including the fight against terrorism and extremism. The source did not provide further details. Meanwhile, the central news unit reported that bin Alawi is expected to discuss regional developments and Iran's nuclear program with Iranian officials. This visit comes after Muscat hosted a trilateral nuclear negotiation between the foreign ministers of the U.S., Iran, and the European Union last week, which concluded on the night of November 19. Following these talks, the U.S. described the discussions as 'frank and difficult,' while an Iranian official noted that there was 'little progress.' The negotiations involved John Kerry, Mohammad Javad Zarif, and Catherine Ashton, focusing on contentious issues such as Iran's uranium enrichment levels, the lifting of sanctions against Tehran, and the timeline for a comprehensive final agreement due by December 3. Iran and the P5+1 group, which includes the U.S., U.K., France, China, Russia, and Germany, reached a temporary six-month agreement in Geneva last year to resolve the nuclear dispute. After this six-month period, negotiations for a comprehensive solution have been ongoing, with both sides now having until December 3 (November 24) to reach a final agreement. Reports suggest that Oman has played a significant role in the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the U.S. over the past two years, hosting informal talks between Washington and Tehran.
