On the anniversary of Mahsa, the US sanctions 25 Iranian individuals, three state-supported media outlets, and one internet company

On the eve of the first anniversary of the killing of Mahsa "Jina" Amini by Iranian security forces, the United States is sanctioning 25 Iranian individuals, three media outlets supported by the Islamic Republic, and one Iranian internet research company involved in the violent suppression of nationwide protests following Mahsa's death. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated in a statement, "We are taking this action in coordination with the UK, Canada, Australia, and other partners who are also imposing sanctions this week. This is the thirteenth round of US sanctions in response to the regime's brutal crackdown on protests." The statement, published on the official website of the US Department of State, also noted that the United States is taking steps to impose visa restrictions on 13 Iranian officials and others involved in the detention or killing of peaceful protesters or obstructing their rights to freedom of expression or assembly. Mr. Blinken mentioned that since the death of Mahsa Amini and the subsequent protests, visa restrictions have been imposed on 40 Iranian officials and others for their roles in suppressing peaceful protesters. The US Secretary of State said, "A year ago, the tragic and unreasonable death of Mahsa in the custody of Iran's so-called 'morality police' sparked protests across Iran that faced indescribable violence, mass arrests, systematic internet disruptions, and censorship by the Iranian regime." He emphasized that "we will continue to take appropriate actions alongside our international partners to hold accountable those who suppress the rights of Iranians to human rights."
