One Year Imprisonment for Matheera Gounai; Charge: Protesting the Death Sentence of Tomaj Salehi

Matheera Gounai, a former member of the Islamic Association of Students at the University of Tehran and Tehran University of Medical Sciences, announced on July 4th her conviction to one year of imprisonment for protesting the death sentence of Tomaj Salehi and her other writings. Previously, in December 2023, she was sentenced by the Central Committee of the Ministry of Health of the Islamic Republic to 24 months of educational deprivation and a transfer to Ardabil University of Medical Sciences due to her participation in the nationwide protests of 2022 in Iran. On Wednesday, she wrote on her X account: 'According to the ruling of the Revolutionary Court, Branch 29, presided over by Judge Ali Mazloom, I was sentenced to one year of imprisonment for propaganda activities against the regime in favor of anti-revolutionary media, which included my protest against the death sentence of Tomaj Salehi and my other writings.' Matheera Gounai, who was the political secretary of the Islamic Association of Students at the University of Tehran and Tehran University of Medical Sciences and the secretary of the Islamic Association of Students at the Faculty of Dentistry, also reported that with the efforts of her lawyers, 'Mr. Nili and Behzadi Rad,' she was acquitted of charges of insulting the leadership and disturbing public order. Her husband, 'Mahdi Hadi Zadeh,' was also sentenced by the Central Committee of the Ministry of Health to two semesters of educational prohibition and exile to Ardabil University of Medical Sciences. Following the nationwide 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests, pressure on students and the repression and harassment of them, especially female students, intensified. Many students were arrested or suspended from their studies, and professors who supported them faced similar fates. Students and professors from over 120 universities in Iran, during the nationwide protests of 2022, expressed their support for the protesting people and called for the 'overthrow' and complete elimination of the Islamic Republic in Iran.
