Ongoing Tensions in the Region; Likelihood of War Between Israel and Lebanon Increases

The Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army stated on Wednesday, January 17, that the likelihood of war between Israel and Lebanon has significantly increased in the coming months. Herzi Halevi emphasized that Israel will apply the lessons learned from the war in Gaza to Lebanon to keep the terrorist group Hezbollah and other threatening forces away from its borders, following a missile strike on one of northern Israel's cities by Hamas. He mentioned that Israel is increasing its readiness for war in Lebanon while visiting Israeli forces training for a simulated attack on Lebanon. The Chief of Staff clarified that his country aims to stabilize its northern borders and allow tens of thousands of Israelis displaced by Hamas attacks to return to their homes. In response to the Chief of Staff's statements, Hezbollah stated that 'any war between Israel and Hezbollah will be detrimental to Israel.' U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has traveled to the Middle East at least four times since Hamas's attack on Israel on October 6, in a diplomatic effort to prevent the escalation of tensions in the region. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah coincides with street fighting with Hamas forces in Gaza. Tensions at the Israel-Lebanon border have intensified, resulting in the deaths of three 'Hamas infiltrators' and two Israeli citizens. Politico reported intelligence officials' warnings that the threat of Hezbollah attacking U.S. interests, even on American soil, is serious. The commander of Hezbollah's air force in southern Lebanon was killed following an Israeli airstrike, and a senior Hezbollah commander was also killed in an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon.
