Opposition from Leader and Senior Democratic Representatives in Congress to Three New Proposals Regarding Iran

Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, has urged her party members to vote against new congressional proposals related to Iran. A group of senior Democratic representatives has also stated they will oppose the proposals. Pelosi has requested that even if a Democratic representative disagrees with the nuclear agreement and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, they should still vote against the presented proposals. Concurrently with Pelosi's letter to Democratic members of the House, a group of senior Democrats in the House has also indicated their opposition to the three new proposals. Steny Hoyer and Eliot Engel, members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, along with Ted Deutch and Nita Lowey, are among the senior Democratic representatives opposing these three proposals. Some Democratic representatives, including Eliot Engel, were known opponents of the JCPOA. Now these Democratic representatives say they have united in opposition to the Republican proposals. These representatives refer to three new congressional proposals that opponents claim will seriously affect Iran's banking transactions and other institutions and countries worldwide or the U.S. government's commitments to implement the JCPOA. The White House had previously threatened that the President would veto these three proposals. The White House's opposition to these proposals is based on the view that they would hinder the implementation of U.S. commitments or could endanger the national security of the country. At the same time, they could lead to the re-imposition of sanctions against institutions and individuals that had been removed from the sanctions list. Pelosi stated on July 13 that the nuclear agreement is 'the best way' to prevent Tehran from accessing nuclear weapons. Iran has always denied seeking nuclear weapons, stating that its program is purely peaceful. Voting on the three new House proposals is scheduled for July 14, U.S. time. The majority in the House is held by Republicans, all of whom oppose the nuclear agreement between Tehran and the six world powers.
