Othman Ismaili, Labor Activist, Sentenced to 16 Months in Prison

Othman Ismaili, a painter and labor activist, announced on Monday, October 30, that the Supreme Court has upheld his 16-month prison sentence. Mr. Ismaili wrote on his Instagram page that the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Saqqez had sentenced him to 16 months in prison on charges of membership in Komala and the Communist Party of Iran. Typically, the Islamic Republic's government condemns political, labor, professional, and civil activists to prison on security charges during security and judicial confrontations. This labor activist noted that in court, he had denied the charges against him while defending his labor activities. He also wrote that he appealed the ruling, but the second branch of the criminal execution office of the public and revolutionary prosecutor's office in Saqqez informed him on Monday via a notification that the Supreme Court had upheld the initial ruling. According to Othman Ismaili, he has 10 days to report for the execution of this sentence. Mr. Ismaili emphasized that he remains opposed to this ruling and defends his labor activities.
