Over 10 Million People Displaced in Sudan

According to statistics from the International Organization for Migration, more than 10 million people have been displaced in war-torn Sudan. This organization announced on Tuesday, June 11, that since the start of the war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary 'Rapid Support Forces' in April of last year, 7.26 million people have been displaced in Sudan, and prior to that, 2.83 million were displaced due to previous military conflicts in the country. Given the lack of prospects for an end to the civil war in Sudan, the United Nations has long warned that the country is facing the world's largest displacement crisis and the potential for famine and hunger. Under the impact of years of military conflict and full-scale war in the past year, more than a quarter of Sudan's 48 million population has been displaced, and over two million people have fled the country. About 3.7 million people, more than a third of all displaced individuals, have fled from Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, which has been severely affected during the civil war and remains a battleground between the two warring factions. In just over a year since the start of the civil war in Sudan, tens of thousands have been killed. In one of the deadliest incidents of the civil war, 15,000 people were killed in just one day in a city in western Darfur. The exact death toll of the civil war in Sudan is unknown, but some sources, including Tom Periello, the U.S. Special Envoy for the Sudan crisis, estimate the number of dead to be around 150,000. Relief organizations and international experts warn that as the humanitarian crisis in Sudan escalates, the death toll will increase. The International Organization for Migration also warned in its report on Tuesday that 70% of the people displaced within Sudan's borders are 'now facing the threat of famine and hunger.' The United Nations also states that about 18 million people in Sudan are suffering from severe hunger, and about 3.6 million children are severely malnourished. According to the International Organization for Migration, about 55% of Sudanese refugees are children under 18 years old, and about a quarter of them are young children under five years old. International relief agencies say that due to the lack of accurate statistics regarding the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, famine has not yet been declared in the country. The United Nations has also accused both sides of the civil war of 'systematic obstruction and deliberate denial' of humanitarian aid to those in need.
