Pakhshan Azizi's Lawyer Claims Evidence Against Death-Row Client is 'Invalid'

Amir Reisiyaan, one of Pakhshan Azizi's lawyers, states that the 'evidence and documents' against this political prisoner sentenced to death are 'invalid.' On Thursday, December 15, he wrote on social media platform X, referring to a request made to the Supreme Court to overturn his client's death sentence: 'In Ms. Pakhshan Azizi's case, the evidence and documents against her were so invalid that merely examining them would have cleared her of the charge of rebellion. Unfortunately, no such examination has taken place so far.' Reisiyaan and Maziar Tataei, Pakhshan Azizi's lawyers, also told the news outlet 'Emtidad' on Tuesday, December 12: 'Despite oral reports, we are hopeful for the overturning of her initial sentence, given the solid evidence presented to the court.' The two lawyers expressed concern about the possibility of a 'hasty review' of their client's case and urged the Supreme Court to pay attention to the 'solid evidence' demonstrating Pakhshan Azizi's innocence, emphasizing that confirmed documents from official sources show that this prisoner focused on humanitarian and aid activities in the refugee camps of the ISIS war and had no involvement in military activities. They noted that despite the evidence and documents submitted to the Supreme Court, the news is not encouraging. However, existing records indicate that in multiple similar cases, death sentences have not been issued for those who did not participate in military activities, which keeps them hopeful for the overturning of the initial ruling. Pakhshan Azizi was arrested on July 4, 2023, in Tehran and accused in the winter of that year of 'rebellion through membership in opposing groups' and subsequently sentenced to death in June 2024.
