Pakistan Government Aims to Ban Imran Khan's Party Activities

The Information Minister of Pakistan stated that the government intends to ban the political activities of Imran Khan's party, the former and imprisoned Prime Minister, due to illegal foreign funding and involvement in the riots following his arrest last year. This decision, announced on Monday, July 25, could escalate the political unrest in Pakistan that began after the parliamentary no-confidence vote against Imran Khan and his ousting in 2022. Despite multiple legal convictions, Imran Khan remains a popular politician and is still considered the main rival of the current Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif. He has denied all allegations against him. Attaullah Tarar, Pakistan's Information Minister, claimed the government has 'concrete evidence' against Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The Pakistani government has long accused this party of receiving funds from foreign individuals and groups. According to Pakistani laws, political parties are not allowed to receive financial assistance from abroad. Mr. Tarar added that the government can declare the PTI illegal under the constitution, but this decision will be referred to the Supreme Court of Pakistan for final approval. The PTI has accused the coalition government of Pakistan of being in a state of 'anxiety and panic' after many charges against Imran Khan were dismissed by judicial authorities. A branch of the Pakistani Supreme Court acquitted Imran Khan of leaking state secrets earlier this year, but he will remain in prison due to other convictions. A court in Pakistan also revoked a seven-year prison sentence for Imran Khan and his wife this past Saturday. Supporters of the former Prime Minister hoped that following this ruling, Khan and his wife would be released from prison after about a year, but the government immediately re-arrested him in connection with last year's riots. The seven-year prison sentence for Imran Khan and his wife was issued due to the 'illegality' of their marriage in 2018. Khan's wife, Ms. Bibi, has repeatedly emphasized that her divorce from her former husband was finalized in August 2017 and that her marriage to Imran Khan, which was formalized in 2018, occurred more than three months after that date. Since Imran Khan's ousting from the Prime Minister's office in 2022, over 150 legal cases have been filed against him. He was arrested in May 2023, leading to violent protests from his supporters. Imran Khan has blamed the U.S. government and the powerful Pakistani military for his ousting. The U.S. government, the Pakistani military, and the current Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, have denied these claims. The violent protests by the former Prime Minister's supporters ended last year when the Supreme Court of Pakistan issued a ruling for Khan's release. However, in early August of last year, he was re-arrested after being sentenced to three and a half years in prison for financial corruption. In recent months, Imran Khan has been acquitted in several cases related to last year's violence, but his request for bail in another trial in Lahore was recently denied. The Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled on Friday, July 22, that Imran Khan's party was illegally deprived of at least 20 parliamentary seats. This ruling will be a significant blow to the fragile coalition government of Pakistan.
