Palestinian Car Attack on Citizens and Police in Jerusalem

Just one day after the Palestine Liberation Organization announced the end of its security cooperation with Israel, a young Palestinian was injured and arrested by police after ramming his car into pedestrians and attempting to stab them. According to the Jerusalem police spokesperson, this man 'drove his car into pedestrians, then got out and tried to attack people with a knife,' but a security force managed to injure him by shooting. Meanwhile, Israeli newspapers Jerusalem Post and Haaretz reported that the target of this Palestinian youth's attack was female soldiers controlling a border checkpoint. The Jerusalem police described this attack as 'terroristic' and reported that four people were injured as a result, while rescue forces reported treating five individuals. This incident occurred along the border line that divides Jerusalem into eastern and western parts. One day before this event, the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization announced that it would end its security cooperation with the Israeli government in response to Israel's seizure of tax revenues belonging to the Palestinian Authority. Mustafa Barghouti, a member of this council, described the new decision as 'the end of the Oslo era' and accused Israel of having 'destroyed' the Oslo peace agreement. Security and intelligence cooperation between the Palestinian Authority is a clause of the Oslo peace agreement reached in 1993 between this authority and Israel with U.S. mediation. Similar car attacks occurred in October and November of the previous year in Jerusalem, resulting in several fatalities.
