Palestinian Killer of Three Israeli Teenagers Sentenced to Three Life Terms

An Israeli military court on Tuesday sentenced a Palestinian named Hussam al-Qawasmi to three life terms for organizing the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers. According to AFP, he was also ordered to pay 250,000 shekels (approximately $63,000) to the family of each victim. The military court session was held near the city of Ramallah in the West Bank. Hussam al-Qawasmi was arrested on June 12 of last year in connection with organizing and financing the kidnapping and murder of the three Israeli teenagers. This act sparked events that ultimately led to a 50-day war in Gaza. The court's ruling stated that "the defendant has been convicted of the gravest crimes, the ruthless and horrific murder of three teenagers. As a result, the defendant is sentenced to three life terms. He is separated from society and will spend the rest of his life in prison. Additionally, he must pay 250,000 shekels in compensation to each of the families of the murdered teenagers." Two others involved in the attack, Amer Abu Aisha, 32, and Marwan al-Qawasmi, 29, were killed in late September during an armed clash with the Israeli army in the city of Hebron in the West Bank. Israel has identified Hamas as responsible for these murders, but Hamas praised the act, stating that these three Palestinians acted independently. The kidnapping of Gilad Frenkel, Gilad Sha'ar, and Eyal Yifrach from a bus station in Hebron last June led to extensive operations by Israeli security forces, during which hundreds of Palestinians were arrested and at least five were killed. Following these operations, rocket attacks from Gaza into Israeli territory began, ultimately leading to a war in Gaza that lasted from July to August of last year. During this 50-day war, nearly 2,200 Palestinians, most of whom were civilians, and 37 Israelis, most of whom were military personnel, were killed. In this context, Israel and the Palestinians reached an agreement on a long-term ceasefire.
