Pardon of Several Democracy Activists by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Egypt

Egypt's state television announced on Saturday that Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the President of Egypt, has pardoned Ahmed Douma, a prominent political activist and democracy advocate, along with several other political prisoners. Ahmed Douma, one of the 'key figures' in the uprising against Hosni Mubarak, was arrested a decade ago and sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of 'rioting and assaulting security forces.' Last month, Patrick Zaki, a human rights researcher, and Mohamed al-Baqer, a defense lawyer, were also released from prison following a similar pardon from el-Sisi. Ahmed Douma was sentenced to six months in prison for calling Morsi a 'murderer and killer' in interviews, an action that activists viewed as part of the crackdown on dissent by Morsi and his Islamist government.
