Parliament's Involvement in the Case of Domestic Torture of Azam and Her Daughters in Mashhad

Javad Karimi Qoddusi, the representative of Mashhad in the Islamic Consultative Assembly, stated that the case of the 21-day torture of a woman and her daughters in Mashhad will be discussed in the parliament and the Security Council of Khorasan Razavi province. On Sunday, May 5, he told ILNA news agency about this case: "On behalf of the representatives of Mashhad, we have written a letter to the Chief Justice, the Minister of Interior, the Governor, and the Minister of Health to follow up on the treatment of these individuals, which will be read from the parliament's podium next week, and we recommended to the Governor that this incident be raised in the Security Council of the province." ISNA news agency reported on May 3 with a photographic report of the signs of torture and injury on a young woman named Azam, whose husband had imprisoned and tortured her along with their two young daughters for 21 days in Mashhad. The publication of images of their torture on social media has sparked significant reactions. According to ISNA, the police managed to arrest Azam's husband, who had fled, after some time. Based on this report, Azam and her two daughters, aged five and eight, were transferred to the hospital due to their severe physical condition and are now under the care of the Welfare Organization. In this regard, Gholamhossein Haqdadi, the Deputy for Social Affairs of the Welfare Organization of Khorasan Razavi, announced on Sunday, May 5, the formation of a specialized team for psychiatric and psychological health to address the situation of "Azam and her daughters." According to Mr. Haqdadi, since the psychiatrist diagnosed that their mental health would improve better together, the mother and her daughters are currently residing in a children's care center, and the daughters are temporarily resting alongside their mother at night. At the same time, on Sunday, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the spokesperson for the Iranian judiciary, denied rumors regarding the release of Azam's husband. According to Mr. Ejei, the accused remains in custody, and the rumor of his release for a bail of 20 million tomans is not true. According to ISNA, Azam's husband has repeatedly acted violently towards his wife during their 12 years of marriage. Azam, who had previously visited forensic medicine three times due to her husband's violent behavior and filed complaints after obtaining medical evidence of injury, stated that "due to fear of her husband's threats and the prospect of her children being fatherless, she withdrew her complaints."
