Peace Negotiations and Hostage Release at Risk; Netanyahu's Insistence on Military Presence at Philadelphi Crossing

A senior Israeli official has warned that Benjamin Netanyahu's insistence on maintaining Israeli military forces at the Philadelphi crossing for another six weeks jeopardizes negotiations regarding the release of hostages. According to the Times of Israel, this senior official stated that Netanyahu's supported plan still requires Israeli defense forces to withdraw from the crossing after the first phase is completed. The security cabinet's decision to support Netanyahu's position on military deployment at the 9-mile Gaza-Egypt border, which was approved on Thursday night, faced severe criticism from this official. He emphasized that the discussion is not about permanent control over the Philadelphi crossing, but rather about an additional six weeks of military presence that includes the first phase of three phases of a ceasefire currently being negotiated. This Israeli official also added that the Israeli security establishment believes that even after withdrawing from this area, there is a possibility of returning to the Philadelphi crossing if necessary. He stressed that this area will be fully equipped with sensors and other security measures to prevent arms smuggling. Meanwhile, Channel 13 news reported that senior officials from several Israeli security agencies have warned that negotiations are on the verge of collapse and have accused the government of advancing negotiations based on 'political considerations.' David Cohen, deputy director of the CIA, stated on Wednesday that the fate of the ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas rests with the leader of this group. Mr. Cohen, in his remarks at a national intelligence and security meeting in Washington, also indicated the seriousness of the Israelis in peace negotiations. During Hamas's terrorist attack on October 7, they killed 1,200 individuals, mostly civilians, and abducted over 250 others, including women, children, and the elderly, as hostages to Gaza. In response to this terrorist attack, the Israeli army launched an offensive against Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas and retrieving the hostages. It is believed that 103 hostages are still held captive by Hamas in Gaza. The Hamas group is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Israel, Canada, Japan, and several other countries around the world. Israel and Hamas agreed on polio vaccination; the killing of two Hamas commanders; the failed attack by Houthis on a cargo ship flying the Liberian flag in the Gulf of Aden; the Israeli army targeted Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon; the polio vaccination campaign in Gaza has begun.
