Peiman Farhangian, Labor Activist, Imprisoned

Peiman Farhangian, a labor activist and poet from Bandar Kiasar in Gilan province, has been transferred to the "Azbaram" prison in Lahijan to serve his one-year sentence. According to the Telegram channel "Manifesto of Freedom, Welfare, Equality," Mr. Farhangian was arrested on Wednesday, January 3, after visiting the execution branch of the public and revolutionary court in the city of Astanah Ashrafiyeh, by agents and judicial officers of the Islamic Republic. This labor activist was sentenced to 38 years in prison by Judge Sadegh Hosseini in the second criminal court of Astanah Ashrafiyeh on September 24, 2020. This sentence was reduced to 10 years in prison by the 18th branch of the Gilan Court of Appeals in May 2021, with 7 years suspended for 5 years. Peiman Farhangian went to Azbaram prison in Lahijan on May 15 last year to serve his sentence but was eventually released conditionally in December of the same year. The 11th branch of the Gilan Court of Appeals also sentenced Mr. Farhangian to one year of imprisonment for the charge of "propaganda against the regime," along with a two-year travel ban and the blocking of his Instagram account. After that, the appeal requests from his lawyers in this branch were rejected. This labor activist wrote on his Instagram page last week that "I have committed no crime other than expressing my thoughts and defending the legitimate rights of the working class and the majority of the working and wage-earning community, or defending unconditional freedoms of expression, media, parties, as well as independent labor, professional, political, and popular organizations, and defending the demand for unconditional freedom for all political prisoners and the complete and unconditional abolition of executions and political crimes, and defending freedom, equality, and socialism has not been and is not in my record." He pointed out that despite his inner reluctance to execute this "unjust sentence," he goes to the execution branch on his own.
