Pentagon Strengthens Southern Border Security with Mechanized Brigade and Air Support Battalion

The U.S. Department of Defense announced that it is enhancing security at the southwestern border by deploying a 'Stryker mechanized' brigade and a general support aviation battalion. A Pentagon spokesperson stated that this action is in line with Donald Trump's directive to strengthen control over the U.S.-Mexico borders and combat illegal immigration, with these units equipped with armored vehicles and air support set to join border operations in the coming weeks. Shan Parnell added, 'These forces will be stationed in the coming weeks, and this action demonstrates the Department of Defense's ongoing commitment to work with the Department of Homeland Security to protect the southern borders and ensure the security of the United States under President Donald Trump's leadership.' The Stryker brigade, consisting of approximately 4,400 soldiers, is one of the U.S. Army's mechanized forces known for its high mobility and rapid response capability. This brigade provides a combination of agility, protection, and firepower using eight-wheeled Stryker armored vehicles, which can be rapidly deployed via C-130 aircraft and be operational within 96 hours. Alongside these forces, a general support aviation battalion with about 650 personnel will be deployed, including Black Hawk helicopters for command and medical evacuation and Chinook helicopters for heavy equipment transport. Additionally, U.S. Northern Command announced that about 2,400 soldiers from Fort Carson in Colorado and another 500 personnel from Fort Stewart in Georgia have joined the mission to control and monitor the southern borders. These forces are expected to operate in operational, support, and administrative roles but will not play a role in executing deportations. Since the beginning of the new presidential term on January 20, 2025, he has ordered the deployment of thousands of military personnel to strengthen border security. In late January, 1,600 Marines and soldiers were sent to the border, joining 2,500 reserve forces that were already stationed there.
