Pentagon's Order for Relocation of U.S. Equipment in the Region and Increased Support for Israel

According to the Pentagon spokesperson, at the direction of the U.S. Secretary of Defense and to increase support for Israel, relocations of U.S. military equipment in the region are taking place. Sabrina Singh, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary, announced on Friday evening, August 12, that these relocations and the addition of new equipment aim to reduce potential escalations from Iran and its proxy groups. Following the killing of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in southern Beirut, officials from the Islamic Republic and Hezbollah have stated they will take revenge on Israel. The Pentagon spokesperson emphasized the unwavering commitment of the United States to Israel's security and noted that Washington remains focused on de-escalation in the region and pressuring for a ceasefire in Gaza. According to details provided by the Pentagon spokesperson, Lloyd Austin, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, has ordered the strike group USS Abraham Lincoln to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt strike group. Earlier, the Washington Post reported, citing an American official, that over the past two days, the USS Roosevelt aircraft carrier and at least five other warships have departed from the Persian Gulf for the Gulf of Oman. The Pentagon spokesperson also stated that at the direction of the Secretary of Defense, cruisers and destroyers capable of ballistic missile defense will be added to the areas under Central Command and European Command, and another squadron of fighter jets will also be deployed to the Middle East. The news of these changes comes a day after a phone conversation between U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The White House issued a brief statement saying that the leaders of the two countries discussed efforts to support Israel in facing threats, including against ballistic missiles and drones, and included 'new U.S. military defensive deployments.' The Washington Post had reported prior to the Pentagon's statement that in the new relocations, the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier and its five destroyers had likely departed from the Persian Gulf for the Gulf of Oman. According to the newspaper, these military vessels are moving away from Iranian waters but could eventually head to the Red Sea and ultimately to Israeli waters. In addition to the deployment of the Abraham Lincoln in the Persian Gulf, which the Pentagon announced, the Washington Post noted that the USS John McCain destroyer will also remain in the Persian Gulf. The United States has also stationed five warships in the eastern Mediterranean waters near Israel. Tensions in the region, which escalated with the extremist group Hamas's incursion into Israeli territory, have intensified in recent days. Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the European Union. On the evening of Tuesday, August 9, the Israeli army reported an airstrike in southern Beirut that killed Foad Shukr, the highest-ranking commander of Hezbollah, in retaliation for an attack on Majdal Shams. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also attributed the killing of Ismail Haniyeh to Israel, stating it occurred around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Israeli officials have not officially claimed responsibility for the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, and in their only comment on the matter, Daniel Hagari, the Israeli army spokesperson, stated that the army did not conduct any other air, missile, or drone strikes in the Middle East on Tuesday night besides the operation targeting Foad Shukr. In this context, Biden stated that the elimination of Haniyeh did not help the ceasefire in Gaza. The Islamic Republic's proxy groups in Syria and Lebanon have been put on high alert. Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas's political bureau, was killed in Tehran after attending a swearing-in ceremony. The Israeli army confirmed the death of the commander of Hamas's military branch.
