Peruvian Archaeologists Discover 3,000-Year-Old Mummy in Lima

Peruvian archaeologists say they have found a nearly 3,000-year-old mummy in Lima, marking the latest discovery in the country. According to Reuters, researchers and students from San Marcos University encountered hair and skull remains wrapped in a linen bundle before uncovering the entire mummified body. Archaeologist Miguel Aguilar stated that this mummy likely belongs to the Manchay civilization, which was established in the Lima valleys between 1500 and 1000 BC, and is associated with a temple built in the shape of the letter 'U' (in the English alphabet) facing the sunrise. Mr. Aguilar mentioned that this individual was either 'left there during the final stages of the temple's construction or was offered (as a sacrifice) to the gods' and added that 'this mummy is about 3,000 years old.' Archaeologists also discovered other items, including corn, coca leaves, and plant seeds that were buried with the body, which they believe were likely part of offerings to the gods. Peru, located in South America, is one of seven countries within the Andes mountain range. The country was under the colonial rule of the Spanish Empire for three centuries starting in the early 16th century until it gained independence in 1824.
