Poland Commemorates the 80th Anniversary of the 'Great Escape' of 76 POWs from Nazi Camps

On Sunday, Poland held several ceremonies to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the 'Great Escape' of 76 prisoners of war from a Nazi camp. During this ingenious initiative during World War II, 76 POWs from a Nazi camp in Poland known as 'Stalag Luft 3' escaped into the surrounding snowy forests through a tunnel they had secretly dug. According to the Polish state television 'TVP World', soldiers from the 11th Armored Cavalry Brigade of Poland and American forces stationed there participated in the ceremony held in 'Zagan', the location of the camp. Most of the soldiers who escaped from 'Stalag Luft 3' on the night of March 24, 1944, faced a tragic end. Only three of them managed to escape, and 50 of the 73 captured were executed on Adolf Hitler's orders. This action, known as the 'Great Escape', embarrassed the Nazis and was later depicted in a 1963 film starring Steve McQueen. The planners of this escape secretly dug three tunnels named 'Tom', 'Dick', and 'Harry' over the course of a year. The Nazis managed to discover the first tunnel, but the other two remained hidden. According to the plan, 200 prisoners were supposed to escape through tunnel 'Harry', but on the night of the escape, the first prisoner who emerged from the tunnel realized that it did not extend as far as anticipated. Before the Nazi guard noticed the footprints of the escaping prisoners, 76 of them fled. However, among them, only the escape of two Norwegian pilots and one Dutchman was successful. Hitler was so enraged by this incident that he ordered the execution of all 73 captured escapees, and ultimately 50 of them were executed in violation of the Geneva Convention regarding the treatment of POWs. Later, the murder of the Allied pilots became part of the Nuremberg Trials, and several Gestapo officers were executed for their involvement in those executions.
