Poland Warns Its Citizens: Do Not Travel to Iran, Israel, and Lebanon

On Friday, August 12, Poland advised its citizens to refrain from traveling to three countries: Iran, Israel, and Lebanon. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement: "In connection with the increasing number of Polish tourists visiting Lebanon, Israel, and Iran, we want to reiterate that we have long advised against any travel to this region." The statement noted that the "unstable security situation" makes it increasingly difficult to exit these three countries. France also advised its citizens on Friday to avoid traveling to Iran and to leave the country "immediately" if they are there. In recent days, the governments of the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and several other countries have warned their citizens not to travel to Lebanon and urged those already in the country to leave quickly. On Friday, the Polish airline announced the cancellation of eight flights to Lebanon and Israel due to the "security situation in the region." Many other international airlines have also canceled their flights to the region in recent days. Senior officials of the Islamic Republic, including Ali Khamenei, the leader, and Hezbollah in Lebanon, have warned that the killings of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas's political bureau, and Foad Shukr, the highest military commander of Hezbollah and the right-hand man of Hassan Nasrallah, will not go unanswered. Meanwhile, Axios reported, citing three American officials, that the Biden administration believes that the Islamic Republic intends to attack Israel in response to the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, in Tehran. The report cited a U.S. defense official stating that the increase in tensions in the Middle East following the killings of senior Hamas and Hezbollah officials has not prompted the Pentagon to deploy additional forces, but the United States has stationed at least 12 warships in the surrounding areas. Israel has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on Foad Shukr, identifying him as the perpetrator of the deadly attack in northern Israel that killed 12 Israeli children, but has not commented on Haniyeh's death. At the same time, an Israeli government spokesperson said on Thursday, August 11, that Israel is prepared for any potential retaliation from the Islamic Republic of Iran and its allies for the killings of senior Hezbollah and Hamas leaders and will respond "severely" to any attack. Regional media reported that Hezbollah is evacuating its positions in Beirut; Iranian proxies are on high alert. The funeral of Ismail Haniyeh was held in Qatar; Israel protested the half-mast Turkish flag. The Israeli army reported that Muhammad al-Jabari, a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad official, was killed. Turkey blocked Instagram for allegedly "censoring" content related to the killing of Ismail Haniyeh. Israel confirmed the killing of an Al Jazeera reporter in Gaza, stating that he was a Hamas operative. Biden and Netanyahu discussed the U.S. commitment to Israel's security against threats from the Islamic Republic. The White House stated that it is monitoring ongoing developments in the Middle East, focusing on preventing a "widespread regional war."
