Political Shift of the Islamic Republic Regarding the JCPOA; Baqeri Kani Says Tehran is Ready to Resume Negotiations with the United States

Ali Baqeri Kani, the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, claimed in an interview with Newsweek magazine published on Tuesday, July 26, that Tehran is ready to resume negotiations regarding the revival of the JCPOA with the United States. He emphasized that Tehran has an 'open' approach to these negotiations and intends to expand its relations with China, Russia, and neighboring countries. Baqeri Kani also described the JCPOA in his speech at the United Nations Security Council as a 'successful multilateral initiative' that was supposed to address the 'fabricated concerns' of the West regarding Iran's nuclear program. He criticized the U.S. withdrawal from the agreement, stating that it harmed all parties involved in the agreement. These statements come as the U.S. has not welcomed the election of Masoud Pezeshkian as the new President of Iran. John Kirby, the White House National Security Advisor, emphasized that Washington is not ready to return to the negotiating table due to the change in the Iranian presidency. Kirby clarified that the Biden administration is committed to diplomacy that advances U.S. interests but does not expect any change in the behavior of Iranian officials. The U.S. State Department spokesperson also reiterated on Monday, July 18, in response to the announcement of Masoud Pezeshkian as the head of the fourteenth government of the Islamic Republic, that with Ali Khamenei in power, the U.S. does not expect any change in Tehran's policies. Matthew Miller stated in a conversation with reporters, 'We do not expect this election to lead to a fundamental change in the direction or policies of the Islamic Republic, as it is Ali Khamenei who has the final say on Iran's policies, not the head of government.' Baqeri Kani also claimed on July 20 in an interview with Islamic Republic TV that indirect and confidential negotiations with the U.S. are ongoing through Oman.
