Poll in the U.S.: Majority of People Want Congressional Support for Nuclear Agreement

A survey conducted by a university in the United States shows that a majority of citizens in that country want Congress to support the nuclear agreement made between the government and five other countries with Iran. In the U.S. Congress, the Senate and House of Representatives currently have a Republican majority, which has repeatedly expressed its opposition to the agreement and does not seem likely to vote in favor of it in the upcoming vote in two weeks. Nevertheless, the survey conducted by the University of Maryland, the results of which were published on September 1, indicates that 55% of Americans want their representatives to support the agreement. On the other hand, 23% want to increase sanctions and 14% want government officials to return to the negotiating table and revive talks for a better outcome. 62% of independents and 72% of official Democratic supporters have asked Congress to vote 'yes' on the agreement. Among official Republican supporters, support for the agreement drops to 33%. Previously, a survey conducted by Reuters in April also showed a somewhat similar number of Republican voters supporting the nuclear agreement with Iran. In surveys conducted from April to July, the overall number of supporters of the agreement ranged from 59% to 56%. The latest survey has been published at a time when two key U.S. senators have announced their support for the agreement, thus the potential use of the President's veto against opponents only requires one more vote. Meanwhile, reports indicate that government supporters are trying to increase the number of supporters to 41 so that there will be no need for a potential presidential veto. In this context, the support of two other senators for the Iran agreement has brought the number of supporters to 33.
