Pope Francis's Condition Worsens; Vatican Programs Canceled Due to Medical Concerns

Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized at Rome's Gemelli Hospital since Friday due to bilateral pneumonia, spent last night peacefully and woke up on Wednesday morning to have breakfast. However, his medical condition remains complicated and requires further medical treatment. According to the Vatican, the latest medical tests have shown that Pope Francis is suffering from a polymicrobial infection in the respiratory tract, which has been exacerbated by conditions of asthmatic bronchitis and bronchiectasis (chronic dilation of the airways). This situation has led to the cancellation of some of the Pope's programs. The Vatican announced that the public 'Jubilee' session scheduled for Saturday has been canceled, and the Pope will also not hold the Sunday ceremony. This is the fourth time in less than four years that Pope Francis has been hospitalized. His physical problems, including severe pain in the hip and knee that has forced him to use a wheelchair, multiple surgeries, and respiratory infections, have raised concerns about his ability to continue his activities. Nevertheless, Pope Francis has refrained from reducing his schedule despite doctors' recommendations. Even in September 2024, he undertook the longest papal trip of his tenure, lasting 12 days to Asia and the Pacific. Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis has consistently mentioned the possibility of resigning from his position due to physical incapacity, similar to the decision of former Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned in 2013 due to health issues. With the continued complex medical situation of Pope Francis and the cancellation of key Vatican programs, the question arises whether he will follow in Benedict XVI's footsteps if his health deteriorates further.
