Precautionary Measures on the Anniversary of the September 11 Terrorist Attacks - 2002-09-10

The United States closed its embassies in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Cambodia as part of heightened security measures on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The U.S. embassy in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, was closed until further notice due to credible terrorist threats. The U.S. embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, was also closed for the same reason. However, the U.S. embassy in Cambodia was closed only as a precaution. In the Philippines, security measures have been increased following media reports of an imminent attack by Islamist terrorists on U.S. and Israeli embassies, but the U.S. embassy in Manila has not been closed. The U.S. government stated that security measures have been increased on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks against America. The U.S. Department of Defense announced that as part of a military exercise to test the defense of the capital, mobile air defense missiles would be deployed at the Pentagon and other locations around Washington. A Pentagon spokesperson told Voice of America that this exercise, codenamed 'Clear Skies Number 2', officially begins on Tuesday, coinciding with the first anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, and will continue for several days. Meanwhile, U.S. fighter jets have begun round-the-clock patrols over New York and Washington several days prior.
