Presidential Elections in Russia Begin Amidst Media Crackdown and Human Rights Groups

The presidential elections in Russia began on Friday, March 15, with voters heading to polling stations in the easternmost regions of Russia, including Chukotka and Kamchatka. The Associated Press reported that the three-day presidential elections are taking place under the shadow of a ruthless crackdown on independent media and human rights groups, allowing Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, to maintain complete control over the political system. In this context, political opponents of Vladimir Putin are either imprisoned or exiled abroad, with the most notable among them, Alexei Navalny, recently dying in a remote prison in the Arctic. The death of Mr. Navalny has pointed fingers at the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin himself, although the Kremlin has denied any involvement in Alexei Navalny's death. According to the report, Vladimir Putin's government will be extended for another six years following this election. Russian voters will cast their ballots from Friday until Sunday, March 17, at polling stations across 11 time zones in this vast country, as well as in regions of Ukraine that have been illegally annexed by Russia. The Associated Press noted that the presidential elections are taking place at a time when the country's war with Ukraine has entered its third year. The news agency added that Russia has an advantage on the battlefield, albeit with small and slow gains. However, Ukraine has made Russia appear vulnerable behind the front lines, including through long-range drone attacks deep into Russia and forcing the Russian Black Sea fleet to take a defensive posture.
