Prisoner Exchange Between Russia and Ukraine After Four-Month Break

After a nearly four-month hiatus, Ukraine and Russia announced that during a prisoner exchange facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, a total of 150 prisoners from both sides were released. According to Reuters and the Associated Press, the 'Ukrainian Coordination Committee on Treatment of Prisoners of War' announced on Friday, June 1, that after a long pause, 75 prisoners, including military personnel and civilians, were exchanged. Images released alongside the committee's statement show soldiers with the blue and yellow national flags of Ukraine. The committee also stated that during the exchange, Russia handed over the bodies of 212 Ukrainian soldiers to Ukraine. The Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the country's Ministry of Defense, that Ukraine also delivered 75 individuals to Russia during the prisoner exchange mediated by the UAE. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced the prisoner exchange on Friday, stating that 75 Ukrainian prisoners, including military members and four civilians, were returned from Russia. He simultaneously welcomed the green light from the U.S. for Ukraine to use American weapons in the war against Russia, describing it as a 'step forward.' The Ukrainian President, who participated in a security meeting between Ukraine and Northern Europe in Stockholm, Sweden, told reporters that this U.S. action is a step forward that enables the defense and protection of the Ukrainian people in border villages. On June 1, Reuters reported, citing four American officials, that Joe Biden, the President of the United States, quietly allowed Kyiv to use American military weapons in attacks on Russian military bases within Russia that target the city of Kharkiv in Ukraine. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also officially announced on Friday that Mr. Biden agreed, after Kyiv's request from Washington in recent weeks, that Ukraine could use American weapons to attack targets within Russia that were attacking the city of Kharkiv. He added, 'In the future, the United States will continue this approach, and if necessary, changes will be made to adapt to new conditions or improve performance.' This new U.S. decision indicates a shift in the Biden administration's policy, which had previously opposed Ukraine's use of American military weapons for attacks on Russian territory. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Western countries, by allowing Ukraine to attack Russian territory using their weapons, are essentially playing with fire, which could lead to global conflict.
