Pro-Palestinian Demonstrations in Cities Across Europe and America Ahead of Gaza War Anniversary

Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian supporters took to the streets in various cities across the United States and Europe, including London, Paris, and Rome, demanding a ceasefire in the Gaza war. According to an Associated Press report, ahead of the anniversary of the extremist group Hamas's attacks on Israel and the start of the Gaza war, groups supporting the people of Palestine and Lebanon have planned protests in cities around the world starting Saturday, October 14, and these demonstrations are set to continue until Tuesday. Hamas is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. Reports indicate that on Saturday, during the first day of these protests, thousands gathered at Russell Square in London, where a significant police presence was also noted. Clashes occurred during the protests in London, and police attempted to calm the situation. The Metropolitan Police in London announced that 15 individuals were arrested on that day, including during the clashes, on charges of disturbing public order and assault. In Rome, several thousand people protested despite lacking a permit for the gathering, and in Hamburg, about 950 people held a separate rally demanding an immediate halt to the war with slogans supporting the people of Palestine and Lebanon. In Paris's Republic Square, several thousand held a peaceful gathering in support of Palestine and Lebanon, chanting against the continuation of the war. In the Philippines, dozens of leftist activists protested near the U.S. Embassy in Manila, but police prevented them from approaching the waterfront area. According to the Associated Press, pro-Palestinian supporters are also scheduled to participate in marches in Washington, Times Square in New York, and several other cities in the United States, as well as in India, Denmark, Switzerland, and South Africa. A counter-demonstration by pro-Israel supporters is expected to take place on Sunday, as Jews around the world are still celebrating the Jewish New Year. Given the rising fears of clashes and the potential for protests to escalate into violence, security forces in several countries have warned of heightened alert levels in major cities. The war in Gaza began following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,205 people, most of whom were civilians. Hezbollah has entered military operations against Israel to support Hamas since the start of the Gaza war. The Israeli government has intensified its operations against Hezbollah in an effort to compel the group to cease its offensive actions. The United States considers Hezbollah a terrorist organization, while the European Union has blacklisted its military wing but does not classify its political wing as terrorist. Hezbollah's political party also has representatives in the Lebanese parliament.
