Pro-Putin Figure Leads in Slovak Parliamentary Elections

Preliminary results in the Slovak parliamentary elections indicate that Robert Fico, the former Prime Minister of Slovakia, has emerged victorious. According to Reuters, the former Prime Minister is known for his criticism of the European Union and NATO, and media outlets have characterized him as a supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Robert Fico opposes military aid to Ukraine, a stance he openly discussed during his campaign. Slovakia, a remnant of former Czechoslovakia, shares borders with the Czech Republic and Austria to the west, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, and Hungary to the south. Fico's party has secured 23% of the votes, surpassing pre-election polls, and although he will need to form a coalition with others to establish a government, his victory has been reported contrary to polling expectations. The liberal party, which supports Ukraine, garnered about 17% of the votes in this election. Over the past year, following Russia's invasion, the current Slovak government has supported Ukraine and was among the first NATO member states to provide military assistance. Robert Fico has previously served as Prime Minister of Slovakia twice and is 59 years old.
