Prosecutors in Russia Request 8 Years in Prison for Anti-War Artist

State prosecutors in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday, November 8, requested that a judge sentence a female artist to eight years in prison following a protest against Russia's war in Ukraine. Alexandra Skochilenko, a 33-year-old artist, conducted this protest on April 1, 2022, by replacing supermarket price tags with paper pieces calling for an end to the war. Skochilenko was arrested a few days later after a complaint from a customer. In her protest, she also displayed information about Ukrainian civilians reportedly killed in Russian shelling, where supermarket prices are usually placed. At that time, Moscow denied attacking civilians. Alexandra Skochilenko, 33, smiled from inside the courtroom cage on November 8, 2023, as she was tried for disseminating false information about Russian military forces. The maximum penalty for this charge is 10 years in prison. She has denied the charges, stating that her act was merely a peaceful protest. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and currently, parts of Ukrainian territory are occupied by Russian forces. The President of Russia has repeatedly framed the invasion of Ukraine as a battle for Russia's survival against the West, warning that his country will use any means to defend itself. In contrast, the United States and its allies have emphasized their continued support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion 'for as long as it takes.' The U.S. has accused the Kremlin of financing the spread of fake news against Ukraine in Latin America. According to Reuters, citing six informed sources, Putin wants to remain in power at least until 2030. Zelensky stated that Iran, Russia, and North Korea are 'throwing gasoline on the fire of war' between Israel and the Palestinians, and that the Israel-Hamas war has caused Ukraine to lose focus.
