Protest Invasion of Over a Thousand Environmental Activists at Tesla Factory in Berlin

German police pushed back hundreds of environmental activists who attempted to enter the Tesla factory, one of the largest electric vehicle manufacturers in the world, located on the outskirts of Berlin on Friday. The protesting activists held placards calling for the destruction of the capitalist system to preserve the future of humanity. A spokesperson for the German police announced on Friday, May 21, that during the clashes between police forces and environmental activists, individuals from both sides were injured, but he could not provide statistics in this regard. Numerous videos showing activists running towards the factory and clashing with police have been shared on German-language social media. According to reports, the protesters broke down the fences of the factory's premises and entered its grounds. The number of protesters is estimated to be between 800 to 1200, who had come to Berlin from various European countries. The environmental activists were protesting the expansion plans of this factory, which began operations in 2022 after a difficult two-year administrative and legal process outside the German capital. These protests have intensified since February of this year against Tesla's activities in Germany. The factory was also forced to halt production last March due to a suspicious fire in nearby power lines, which was claimed by an extremist leftist group. Tesla aims to expand this 170-hectare site to produce up to one million more vehicles annually to meet the growing European demand for electric cars while keeping pace with competitors moving away from combustion vehicles. However, the "Grünheide" area in southeastern Berlin, where the Tesla factory is located, is near a protected forest, raising concerns about the amount of water used by Tesla. Local residents voted against this project in a non-binding referendum in February of this year.
