Protests Against the Arrest of Danial Moghadam and Vafa Ahmadpour; Nasir Mashkouri: We Are Witnessing the Emergence of a New Type of 'Resistance Music' in Iran

The arrest of Danial Moghadam and Vafa Ahmadpour, known as 'Vafadar', two rap artists of protest music in Iran, has sparked significant reactions on social media. Recently, Danial Moghadam and Vafa Ahmadpour released a music video titled 'Be Ready', filmed at Persepolis, criticizing the Islamic Republic, the country's crises, and the problems faced by the Iranian people. Their arrest comes at a time when the death sentence issued for another Iranian rapper, Tomaj Salehi, has faced widespread global protests. Despite security and judicial crackdowns, including torture and heavy prison sentences and death sentences against Iranian rappers, the release of protest works continues within Iran, and we are witnessing the emergence of a different type of protest music or 'resistance music', particularly in the rap genre. Nasir Mashkouri, a music expert and author of the book 'Hip-Hop Generation', told Voice of America: 'Protest music against the social structure governing society, which was considered a type of resistance music in its time, has always existed. However, in its modern form, which is not only critical and anti-political authority but also has a subversive content, was practically initiated in its complete form by Tomaj Salehi.' He adds: 'What we recognize today as resistance music is actually the works of those artists who combine critical and anti-authority content with civil activism. These artists are both civil activists and music creators, and most importantly, they live inside Iran.' According to this music expert, currently, these three characteristics define Iranian resistance music, which is primarily manifested in rap music. Mashkouri discusses the features of these works, stating: 'The era of requests and demands in Iranian protest music is over. Today, in resistance music, specifically in the recent song by Danial and Vafadar, we hear about unity, system change, and readiness for a revolutionary struggle against the system.' He adds: 'In the recent rap song by Danial Moghadam and Vafadar, we hear a rap narrative about the readiness of an explosive society against a corrupt and undemocratic authority for change. In fact, it speaks of revolution, not merely social protest.' This music expert comments on the impact of such works in society, saying: 'I do not believe that music and art are influential; they are, in fact, influenced. This means that resistance music is actually a mirror of society, not a spokesperson or representative of society. We should look at this phenomenon in reverse.' He adds: 'What we hear in this music is essentially the suffocated cry of the young Iranian society. I believe that the audience of this type of music hears their own words that they cannot freely shout in these works, not the other way around. We are actually hearing the psychological states of an explosive society, not just the thoughts of two political and desperate rappers.' Regarding the violent repression of the Islamic Republic and the arrest and imprisonment of these rappers, he states: 'Perhaps this repression will yield short-term results, but the more repression and censorship increase, the more desperate individuals will take the microphone, and this movement will continue.' Referring to the death sentence issued for Tomaj Salehi, he says: 'Did this sentence stop Danial and Vafadar? On the contrary, it encouraged them. I think this issue should be viewed from a social perspective. Did the repression of the Mahsa movement prevent the next uprising? In fact, the actions of Danial and Vafadar proved that no, we will soon witness another uprising.' According to available reports and the accounts of Danial Moghadam and Vafa Ahmadpour's social media, they were arrested by the security forces of the Islamic Republic in Shiraz on Friday, May 20, and transferred to an undisclosed location.
