Putin at the Signing Ceremony of the Rasht-Astara Railway Contract: Competing with the Suez Canal

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, and Ebrahim Raisi, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, were observers of the signing of a contract for financing and constructing a railway in Iran during a video conference on Wednesday. The Rasht-Astara railway is considered an important part of the International North-South Transport Corridor. This route is intended to connect India, Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, and other countries via rail and sea. According to Reuters, Russia claims this route could compete with the Suez Canal as a major global trade route. Putin stated, 'The unique North-South transport artery, of which the Rasht-Astara railway will be a part, will help diversify global traffic flows significantly.' He also mentioned that the 162 kilometers of railway being constructed along the Caspian Sea coast will assist in connecting Russian ports in the Baltic Sea to Iranian ports in the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf. Ebrahim Raisi also described this agreement as an important and strategic step in the cooperation between Tehran and Moscow. Both Russia and Iran are under severe Western sanctions, with Russia primarily due to its invasion of Ukraine and the Islamic Republic due to terrorism, its nuclear program, and human rights violations. The U.S. is attempting to end military cooperation between the Islamic Republic and Russia, with reports indicating that Russia is seeking to acquire 400 advanced drones from Iran.
