Putin Calls Ban on Paralympic Participation 'Unethical and Inhumane'

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, on Thursday, September 4, joined a group of high-ranking officials in his country who condemned the ban on Russian athletes from participating in the Rio Paralympics, deeming it a conspiracy. Speaking at a ceremony honoring Russian athletes who returned from Rio de Janeiro at the Kremlin, Putin described the ruling as 'beyond the law, ethics, and humanity.' It also appears that Vladimir Putin intends to hold competitions similar to the Rio Paralympics in Russia. On Thursday, he promised that events would be organized in Russia so that banned Russian Paralympians could 'showcase all their skills.' He even emphasized that the prizes for the champions of these competitions would be exactly the same as those awarded to champions at the Paralympics. The Sports Arbitration Court announced on Tuesday, September 2, that the International Olympic Committee's ruling regarding the complete ban of the Russian team from participating in the Rio Paralympics is in accordance with the law, and these athletes will not have the right to participate in this Olympic event. The International Paralympic Committee states that based on evidence, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency did not comply with anti-doping regulations or the use of performance-enhancing drugs. The allegations of doping and their proof concerning some athletes, such as Maria Sharapova, have long plagued Russian athletes and have also implicated government officials in the country. In response to the court's confirmation of the Olympic Committee's ruling, the Russian Minister of Sports called the decision 'political,' a point that Vladimir Putin also emphasized on Thursday. He stated, 'Unfortunately, we have witnessed how the humanitarian foundations of sports and the Olympics have been grossly contaminated by politics.' At the Rio Olympics in Brazil, Russia achieved fourth place in the world, receiving 56 medals, including 19 gold medals. Aside from the ban from the 2016 Paralympics, more than a hundred Russian athletes also did not qualify to participate in the Rio Olympics.
