Putin's Spokesman Accuses the U.S. of Attempting to Influence Russian Elections

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian presidential office, stated that from Moscow's perspective, the U.S. aims to influence the Russian elections scheduled for March 18 by releasing a list of wealthy individuals close to Vladimir Putin, known as the 'Kremlin Report.' Peskov made this remark on January 29, just before the U.S. Treasury Department was set to publish the list, which has already gained the nickname 'Kremlin Report.' The Kremlin spokesman said, 'We truly believe this is a blatant and direct action to synchronize the report with the elections in order to influence them.' Following reports from U.S. security agencies accusing Vladimir Putin of orchestrating a propaganda campaign and cyberattacks to influence the 2016 elections, the U.S. Congress passed a law to intensify pressure on Russia, requiring the government to prepare this report. Donald Trump, who defended improving relations with Russia during his campaign, reluctantly signed this law last summer. The regulations gave the Treasury Department, State Department, and U.S. security agencies 180 days to identify individuals based on 'proximity to the Russian government and their wealth.' Russian businesspeople and wealthy individuals named in this list will not be immediately sanctioned but may become targets of U.S. punitive actions in the future. There is also a possibility that part of this list will remain classified. According to U.S. officials and advisors to Russian traders and capitalists, the report, set to be published soon, has created significant concern among Russia's economic elites. However, Dmitry Peskov dismissed the report's significance, stating, 'We are confident it will not affect the election results.' Given the Russian government's tight control over the political landscape, the suppression of dissent, and the marginalization of opposition politicians, it is certain that Vladimir Putin will win this election and serve another six-year term as President of Russia. Political analysts say that Mr. Putin emphasizes the importance of increasing public participation in the elections. The upcoming six-year term will be Mr. Putin's last as he cannot run for a third consecutive term in 2024 according to the Russian constitution. In the U.S., Robert Mueller, the special counsel of the Justice Department, and three separate congressional committees are investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections and the possibility of collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and Russia. Despite U.S. officials claiming there is ample evidence in this regard, Vladimir Putin has denied any Russian interference in these elections. Donald Trump has also explicitly denied any cooperation or collusion with Russia.
