Qazvin Prosecutor: We Have Identified a Thousand 'Infiltrator' Groups on Social Media

The public prosecutor of Qazvin province has reported the identification of a thousand 'infiltrator' groups on social media in the province and the issuance of some unprecedented rulings against some of them. According to the Mehr News Agency, Ismail Sadighi Niyarki stated this during a press conference on Wednesday, July 2, adding that these groups have been active socially 'against the security of the country.' According to this judicial official, these individuals and movements were 'some at the beginning of their activities and some during their activities, and by identifying them, we prevented their destructive actions.' Sadighi Niyarki also mentioned the 'warning from the Qazvin prosecutor's office' to 200 virtual activists and said that 'commitments' were taken from another 300 individuals regarding their activities on social media. This judicial official added, 'In one case, we obliged a convicted individual to read the book on the Islamic Revolution and present a summary of it like a university thesis.' According to Sadighi Niyarki, 'Our approach in these types of punishments is to enhance the cultural awareness of the offenders, and in another case, we sentenced an individual to read the treatises of the great religious authorities, and another individual was pardoned for memorizing the Quran.' The Qazvin prosecutor also warned those who upload 'photos of anti-revolutionary individuals and former regime leaders' in their profiles that this act 'is not befitting the system, and we will deal with it.' He stated, 'Activities on social media that violate the law, ethics, religion, and regulations will be subject to judicial action, and we have no qualms in this regard.' Qazvin is one of the provinces in Iran where judicial officials have always taken a hardline stance against social media activists. The Qazvin prosecutor's office has repeatedly warned activists in this field about certain social and cultural activities in recent years and has arrested some of them in certain cases. The Hezbollah movement in Qazvin is also among the groups that have issued strong statements opposing certain social and cultural issues over the past year. In May of last year, following warnings from Hezbollah forces about the spread of full-body waxing for women in beauty salons in this province, it was announced that 'violating' beauty salons would be shut down. Sadighi Niyarki stated that the act of 'illegal and un-Islamic' waxing is considered a crime, even if those providing it have obtained licenses and permits for establishing their institutions. On June 6 of this year, the Qazvin prosecutor's office also reported the arrest of 35 young girls and boys in Qazvin for attending a party and their immediate punishment with 99 lashes, which received widespread media coverage at the time.
