Qeshm Prosecutor Seizes a Ship Due to 'Mixed Gender Recreational Activities of Tourists'

The prosecutor of Qeshm announced that a recreational ship has been seized due to the mixed gender of its tourist passengers. Omid Mahdavi Majd stated on Thursday evening, May 21, that the reason for the seizure was the disregard for 'Islamic norms' and 'norm-breaking' through mixed-gender recreational activities. Officials of the Islamic Republic have introduced mandatory hijab and the prohibition of social freedoms as 'norms' and punish any resistance in these areas under the pretext of 'norm-breaking.' This is the second case of ship seizures on the southern coasts of Iran in the past week due to the mixed gender of passengers and the lack of hijab among women. Authorities on this island stated that the seizure of the vessel was carried out by judicial order following 'boarding a number of tourists in a mixed manner and with inappropriate attire for recreational activities.' This seizure occurred after officials of Hormuz Island, in cooperation with the Revolutionary Guards, the police, and the office of the Friday prayer leader, launched a month-long drill named 'Chastity and Hijab.' In recent months, officials of the Islamic Republic have been trying to counter opponents of mandatory hijab by closing hundreds of businesses, tourism units, restaurants, and even doctors' offices and pharmacies.
