Reaction of Some US Lawmakers to Trump's Statements Following the Memo on the FBI

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, claims that the Republican memo regarding 'politicization' in the FBI's investigation into Russia completely exonerates him. However, several lawmakers in the United States have stated that this is not the case. Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, on Friday, February 1, released a memo with Trump's approval accusing the FBI of 'politicization' and 'abuse of power' in the investigation into Russian interference in the elections. In this four-page memo, the FBI and the US Department of Justice are accused of violating regulations during the surveillance of Carter Page, a member of Donald Trump's campaign team. After the memo was released, Trump tweeted that he is now 'completely exonerated' from the investigation. The President emphasized that his administration did not engage in any 'collusion or obstruction' regarding the execution of justice or blocking the FBI's investigations. On the other hand, Democratic members and some Republicans in Congress have stated that the memo released by Trump does not exonerate him from the case. House Democrats, sharply criticizing the release of this memo, promised to publish their assessment of the investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election on Monday. The Associated Press, in a report published on Sunday, February 3, quoted Democratic members and some Republicans in Congress expressing hope that Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, would continue his investigations without any external interference. Adam Schiff, a senior Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which has a Republican majority, called the released memo 'politicization' and asked Devin Nunes, the committee's chairman, to explain whether he coordinated with White House officials in writing this report. Nunes denied any coordination with the Trump administration in writing the memo's contents, but he did not respond to questions about his team's coordination with the White House and remained silent. Schiff stated that the memo attempts to undermine the credibility and objectives of the FBI as well as Mueller's investigations. Senator Dick Durbin, a senior Democratic representative, also told CNN that if Republicans believe that releasing the memo can stop Mueller's investigations, they will face legal backlash. He stated that if it is believed that this memo could be a pretext for Trump to halt Mueller's investigations and remove him from his position, it implies that in America, one person is above the law. Previously, however, the White House had stated that this memo raised 'serious concerns about the integrity of decisions made by senior officials in the Department of Justice and the FBI.' The White House clarified in its statement that the government is ready to cooperate with Congress to facilitate the release of more sections of this memo in accordance with standards while considering the protection of information and sources. Several US intelligence agencies had previously announced that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election and attempted to change the election results in favor of Donald Trump through hacking and false propaganda. Russia has denied these allegations.
