Reactions in Germany to Musk's Statements; Aimed at Influencing Elections and Weakening Europe

The German government announced that Elon Musk, senior advisor to Donald Trump, the elected President of the United States, is attempting to influence the upcoming elections in Germany by supporting the far-right party "Alternative for Germany." Recently, Mr. Musk expressed in a message on X (formerly Twitter), which he owns, and then in an article in the German newspaper "Die Welt," that only the "Alternative for Germany" party can save the country. Christian Hoffmann, spokesperson for the German government, reacted on Monday, January 1, stating that Elon Musk's efforts to "influence" the German parliamentary elections is "a reality." The spokesperson added that in Germany, it is the voters who decide for their country by going to the polls. Musk's call for the German people to vote for the far-right party has sparked reactions. Hoffmann stated that Musk is free to express his opinion but "does not need to share it." The coalition government of Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, collapsed last month following the departure of the Free Democratic Party from the tripartite coalition and the dismissal of the party's finance minister, with early parliamentary elections scheduled for March 24. Elon Musk, owner of Tesla, SpaceX, and X, whose wealth recently surpassed $400 billion, is a senior advisor to Mr. Trump and is set to be one of two officials for a new American entity aimed at improving federal government efficiency with the start of the new Washington administration. After an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, Musk supported him and spent most of his time alongside the elected president after his victory in the elections. Musk's personal attacks against Olaf Scholz became evident following the deadly attack on December 21 in Germany, where a Saudi immigrant psychiatrist killed five people and injured about 200 by driving his car into a crowd at a Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg. That night, Musk referred to Scholz as an "incompetent fool" and wrote that he should resign immediately. Musk's intervention in German politics has also faced criticism from Friedrich Merz, the leader of the conservative opposition. According to AFP, Merz stated that he cannot recall a similar instance in the "history of Western democracy" where someone from an allied country intervened in such a manner. Lars Klingbeil, leader of the Social Democrats, the party allied with Olaf Scholz, also remarked that Musk is doing what Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, is doing, as both aim to influence our elections by supporting the "Alternative for Germany" and weaken Germany, leading it towards chaos. Robert Habeck, Scholz's deputy and Minister of Economy, stated on Monday night that Musk is "weakening" Europe because a weak Europe is "beneficial for those who see regulatory constraints as a threat to their power." With eight weeks remaining until the elections, polls in Germany indicate that the far-right party, known as AfD, could secure 19% of the vote, placing it second after the party led by Friedrich Merz. German parties have announced they will not cooperate with the "Alternative" party and will not be potential allies in forming the next government. Elon Musk believes that the AfD is "not extreme" and could "liberate" Germany from its problems if it comes to power. Germany is a prominent ally of the United States in NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and a series of other groups of leading global countries and economies such as the G7.
