Reactions to the Arrest of Italian Journalist in Tehran; Rome Says the Issue is 'Complex'

The Italian Foreign Minister stated that the case of Cecilia Sala, the Italian journalist detained in Iran, is 'complex' but expressed hope that the 29-year-old journalist could return home soon. Antonio Tajani, in an interview with the Italian news agency Ansa on Saturday, January 8, expressed hope that the issue would be resolved quickly but added, 'This matter does not depend on us; we are trying to resolve a complex issue.' According to the Italian Foreign Minister, Cecilia Sala is being held in solitary confinement, her conditions are 'appropriate,' and Italy will continue to monitor her situation. He added, 'It seems she is being treated in a manner that is dignified and respectful,' and stated that 'so far we have not received negative feedback on this matter.' Antonio Tajani mentioned that the official reason for the journalist's detention by the Islamic Republic of Iran is still unclear, but he expressed hope that her lawyer would soon be able to meet with her and obtain more information. Cecilia Sala is a producer for a well-known show called 'Stories' and also a journalist for the newspaper 'Il Foglio.' Meanwhile, two journalist advocacy organizations described the detention of the Italian journalist in Tehran as arbitrary and aimed at 'extortion,' and international media have noted that this action occurred just days after the arrest of an Iranian in Italy. The Italian Foreign Ministry reported on January 7 that Cecilia Sala had been detained in Tehran for nine days (since December 20) and is in solitary confinement. The charges against this journalist, who traveled to Iran for a report, have not been disclosed, and Iranian officials have not yet reacted to the news of her detention. Reporters Without Borders described Ms. Sala's arrest as 'arbitrary' and called for her immediate release. According to this organization, the detention of this Italian journalist 'without any reason' and 'despite having a valid visa' shows all the characteristics of arbitrary detention. Arbitrary detention refers to the process of arresting an individual without providing explanations about the charges, without evidence of possible criminal conduct, or without adhering to fair and legal procedures. The International Federation of Journalists also issued a statement calling on Iranian authorities to release this Italian journalist immediately and unconditionally. Anthony Bellanger, the Secretary-General of this federation, stated, 'We regret Iran's tactics of imprisoning foreign journalists to obtain something in return; Cecilia Sala is the latest victim of this horrific act.' Meanwhile, several international media outlets have noted that the detention of Ms. Sala in Tehran occurred just days after the arrest of Mohammad Abedini in Italy. Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi has been accused by the U.S. Justice Department of transferring sensitive technologies from the U.S. to Iran in collaboration with his accomplice, Mehdi Mohammad Sadeghi; technologies that were used in a drone attack on a U.S. base in Jordan, resulting in three fatalities. According to the Wall Street Journal, the arrest of this Italian journalist has raised concerns that Iranian officials intend to use her as leverage in their dealings with the West. The Wall Street Journal referred to this method as a 'common tactic among authoritarian regimes.' The newspaper noted, 'Iran is a pioneer in the use of the arbitrary detention of foreign nationals and using them as bargaining chips to gain concessions,' and 'Russia has also recently adopted this tactic.' The Financial Times also noted that just three days before Ms. Sala's arrest, 'Italy had arrested an Iranian national accused by the U.S. of sending drone technology to Tehran.' The New York Times emphasized that the imprisonment of Iranian journalists in Iran is common and stated that the detention of foreign journalists 'is part of a policy to extract concessions from other countries, including prisoner exchanges.' Claudio Chiarasa, the editor of Il Foglio, wrote in a message on the newspaper's website: 'Journalism is not a crime, even in countries that suppress various freedoms, including press freedom.' The Italian Foreign Ministry previously stated that Ms. Sala had only been allowed two calls with her family since her arrest, and on Friday, Paula Amadi, the Italian ambassador in Tehran, was able to meet with her.
