Reactions to the Defeat of Brexit Plan in the British Parliament

The rejection of Theresa May's plan for the UK's exit from the European Union in the British Parliament has sparked widespread reactions among European countries. On Tuesday, Members of Parliament voted against the Brexit plan with 432 votes to 202 in favor. The British government has until next Monday to present an 'alternative' proposal. Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, stated that if the UK leaves the EU without an agreement, it will be the biggest loser. Macron said, 'The first option is for them to move towards a no-deal Brexit. They say there is no agreement. This is terrifying for everyone. The first loser will be the British.' In this context, Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, after the negative vote in the British Parliament on Mrs. May's Brexit plan, stated that EU members still maintain a unified position regarding Brexit. A spokesperson for Donald Tusk said, 'We regret the outcome of the vote in the British Parliament and urge the UK government to clarify its position on the next steps as soon as possible.' Tusk previously tweeted, 'If an agreement is impossible, and no one wants a no-deal, then ultimately who has the courage to say what the only positive solution is?' Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, also reacted to the British Parliament's vote, stating that the EU is intensifying its preparations for a no-deal Brexit. He said in a statement, 'The risk of a chaotic exit for the UK has increased with today’s vote.' Juncker added, 'While we do not want such a scenario, the European Commission will continue its potential actions to ensure that the EU is prepared.' Olaf Scholz, the German Vice Chancellor, also remarked that the defeat of Theresa May's Brexit plan in the British Parliament was a 'bitter day' for Europe. Scholz stated, 'This is a bitter day for Europe. We are fully prepared, but a hard Brexit will be the least attractive option for both Europe and the UK.' The Irish government also stated that despite the defeat of Theresa May's Brexit plan, the EU is not willing to renegotiate on this matter. However, the Irish government emphasized that a chaotic Brexit would have negative consequences for all parties involved. The Brexit agreement was reached in November, aiming for a smooth exit of the UK from the EU on March 29.
