The leader of the Christian Democratic Union also called for action from the European Union against the officials involved in Sharmad's execution and for sanctions against them. Merz added that Germany's policy towards the Islamic Republic in recent years has been based on the 'illusion' of a government willing to cooperate in Iran, which should now be discarded following the execution of a German citizen by the Islamic Republic. Norbert Röttgen, a member of the German parliament, expressed his deep disgust for the 'mullah regime' in a post about the kidnapping, torture, and execution of Jamshid Sharmad.
