Reason for Bombing IRGC Facilities in Syria; White House: Response to Attacks on American Forces

The White House states that the recent U.S. military strikes on facilities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Syria aimed to destroy weapons used by these forces and Iran's proxy groups and to prevent American personnel in the region from being targeted by these groups. According to Reuters, American fighter jets attacked facilities in eastern Syria used by the IRGC and its proxy groups on Wednesday, November 8. The attack was carried out by two F-15 fighter jets targeting weapons storage facilities. President Joe Biden stated that the U.S. had to respond to the targeting of American forces, adding that these retaliatory strikes have been effective. When asked whether the U.S. military would respond again, Biden said that the U.S. would do so if necessary. John Kirby, the National Security Council's Strategic Communications Coordinator, told CNN that the U.S. attacks have had 'practical effects on the ability of these groups to supply weapons and have sent a strong deterrent message.' Kirby added, 'If they want to continue attacking our forces in Iraq and Syria, they must face the consequences.' Iranian-backed militia groups have attacked American forces and their allies in Syria and Iraq at least 40 times following heightened tensions after the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Hamas. As a result of these attacks, 45 American soldiers have suffered brain injuries or minor wounds. Iran has denied involvement in these attacks, even as Iranian officials emphasize their support for proxy groups in the Middle East. Saeed Iravani, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, stated that militia groups are responding to Israel's attack on Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 10,800 Palestinians in Gaza. This is in the context of Israel requesting Palestinian civilians in northern Gaza to relocate to the south while accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields. Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S., the EU, the UK, and several other countries. Iravani also told CNN that this is a 'natural reaction from resistance groups' and that they are proceeding with 'coordination.' However, Kirby rejected these claims, stating that while these groups have some autonomy, they are 'encouraged' to carry out these attacks. He emphasized that the IRGC is directly involved in 'guiding some of these attacks' by assisting these groups in making certain decisions.
