Record Number of Women in the Cabinet of New British Prime Minister

Keir Starmer's cabinet, the new Prime Minister of Britain, will have the highest number of female members and also the most ministers who have studied in public schools in the history of the country. According to a list published on Friday, July 5, Angela Rayner, a British female politician, has become the new Deputy Prime Minister. In a country where the ruling class has mostly studied at Oxford and Cambridge universities, 44-year-old Angela Rayner grew up in social housing in northern England, left school without a qualification, and was a single mother at 16. Rachel Reeves, a former economist at the Bank of England, is the first British woman to reach the position of Minister of Economy. Her appointment has been described as breaking the 'last glass ceiling in politics' in Britain. She advocates for an active government role through investment and aims to rebuild public services in Britain. The level of women's presence in the new British cabinet comes at a time when over 40% of the new parliament seats are held by women. Despite 89 representatives from ethnic minorities entering the new British parliament, only three of these minorities have made it to the cabinet, and David Lammy is the only Black member to join Starmer's government, becoming the new Foreign Secretary. David Lammy, the new Foreign Secretary of Britain, is a friend of former U.S. President Barack Obama and is considered a critic of another former president, Donald Trump. However, British media reports indicate that he recently met with advisors of Republican candidates in the U.S. elections. Additionally, the first Labour cabinet in fourteen years will only have two Asian ministers, one of whom, Shabana Mahmood, is one of the first Muslim women representatives. Only two ministers in Starmer's cabinet attended private schools. The replacement of many Conservative representatives with Labour representatives in parliament has increased the proportion of members educated in public schools from 54% in the previous parliament to 63%. However, this figure is still lower than the average of 88% among the general public who attend public schools, but it shows the highest proportion of parliament members educated in public schools.
