Reduction of Prison Sentence for Ali Younesi and Amirhossein Moradi to 6 Years and 8 Months

The lawyer for Ali Younesi and Amirhossein Moradi, two imprisoned students, announced a reduction in their prison sentences following the acceptance of a retrial by the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic. Mustafa Nili, the attorney, wrote on social media platform X on Sunday, March 10, that 'after the acceptance of the retrial in the Supreme Court, the equivalent branch reduced Mr. Ali Younesi's maximum and enforceable sentence from 10 years to six years and eight months.' According to the lawyer of this political prisoner, a similar process had previously occurred regarding the case of Amirhossein Moradi, another imprisoned student, and currently, his enforceable sentence has also been reduced to six years and eight months. Ali Younesi, a computer engineering student at Sharif University and a gold medalist in the Astronomy Olympiad in 2017, was arrested in 2020 and sentenced to 16 years in prison after spending months in solitary confinement, with 10 years of that sentence being enforceable. Amirhossein Moradi, a physics student at Sharif University and a silver medalist in the Astronomy Olympiad, was also accused of 'collusion and conspiracy to act against national security' and 'propaganda against the regime,' and was sentenced to 16 years in prison by the Islamic Revolutionary Court, with 10 years of that sentence being enforceable.
