Release of Six Israeli Hostages by Hamas Following Delivery of Shiri Bibas' Body

Hamas released six Israeli hostages today, while last night the body of Shiri Bibas, one of the Israeli captives, was handed over to the authorities of that country. This exchange takes place within the framework of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas that has been in effect since January 19, and in return, Israel will release 602 Palestinian prisoners. The release of hostages occurred in two phases. According to Reuters, in the first phase, "Tal Shoham" (40 years old) and "Ora Mengistu" (39 years old) were handed over by Hamas to the Red Cross in Rafah, located in southern Gaza. Before their release, they were led by armed Hamas forces to a stage and displayed; an action condemned by the United Nations and criticized as a "showing of hostages." In the second phase, four other hostages were released in central Gaza. These individuals include: "Elia Cohen" (27 years old), "Omer Shamtoof" (22 years old), "Omer Vankert" (23 years old), and "Hisham Al-Sayed" (36 years old). According to reports, Al-Sayed, the sixth hostage, was handed over to the Red Cross at a third location in Gaza City without any ceremony. Cohen, Shamtoof, and Vankert were captured during Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, while Al-Sayed and Mengistu entered Gaza about a decade ago for unspecified reasons and have been held captive by Hamas since then. The delivery of Shiri Bibas' body, a symbol of the hostage crisis, has created new tensions in Israel. On Thursday, Hamas announced that it had delivered Shiri Bibas' body, but forensic tests revealed that the corpse did not belong to her. This issue, which Hamas referred to as a "mistake," caused severe anger among Israelis and threats to cancel negotiations. However, last night, Hamas delivered another body that, according to Israeli forensic announcements, definitively belonged to Shiri Bibas. The Bibas family stated, "Last night, our Shiri returned home." Bibas was captured on October 7, 2023, along with her husband "Yarden Bibas" and their two young sons "Kafir" (10 months) and "Ariel" (4 years old). Yarden Bibas was released on February 1, but the fate of the children was tragic. According to the Israeli army, forensic tests indicate that Kafir and Ariel were "brutally killed" by Hamas forces. However, Hamas continues to claim that this family died in Israeli airstrikes. In exchange for the release of the Israeli hostages, Israel will release 602 Palestinian prisoners. According to Hamas, 445 of these prisoners, including several with long sentences, were detained by Israeli forces during the recent war. This exchange occurs while many Israelis are concerned about the release of individuals accused of carrying out attacks against Israelis. In this context, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened that Hamas must pay the "full price" for not fully returning the bodies of the hostages. However, he refrained from canceling the ceasefire agreement. The current ceasefire agreement has led to a temporary reduction in hostilities, but the prospect of a definitive end to the war remains unclear. Reports indicate that negotiations for entering the second phase of the hostage exchange are ongoing. In this phase, the return of about 60 remaining hostages will be discussed. According to assessments, less than half of these individuals are alive. However, disagreements about the future of Gaza and Israel's role in managing this area remain a serious obstacle to reaching a final agreement.
