Release of Three American Prisoners in Yemen Mediated by Oman

The official news agency of Oman has reported the release of three American citizens imprisoned in Sanaa. According to security officials, two of the released individuals were contracted by the United Nations, whose recent arrest by Houthi rebels in Yemen had been publicized. On Thursday, November 18, the Associated Press reported that the Omani news agency, in a brief statement announcing the release of the three American citizens by Houthi forces, noted that the U.S. State Department had requested Oman to facilitate the exit of these citizens from Yemen. The Associated Press also mentioned that the Omani news agency did not provide further details about the identities of the released individuals, but cited a knowledgeable source in the Omani Foreign Ministry stating that 'the three Americans have been transferred from Sanaa to Muscat by a Royal Air Force plane of Oman and will be returned to their country.' At the same time, the Associated Press cited independent security sources in Yemen and members of the Houthi group stating that the three American nationals had been detained for at least the past two months in a security building belonging to the Houthis in the capital, Sanaa. These sources also informed the Associated Press that two of the released individuals were contracted by the UN in Sanaa. The Associated Press also recalled that in recent months, several foreign nationals have been detained by the Houthis for extortion purposes or as political hostages. The news agency mentioned the 'arrest of two Americans suspected of espionage' by the Houthis and noted that it is unclear whether these individuals are among those released. In another instance, the Associated Press referred to the detention and death of John Hemen, another American citizen, whose death was announced by U.S. officials on November 10, less than ten days ago, although the cause of his death was not mentioned. John Hemen worked for a company managing UN-related buildings in Sanaa and had entered Sanaa less than a month ago on October 20, arriving with another American on a UN flight from Djibouti. The release of the three American citizens coincides with reports from Iranian news agencies on Thursday about a meeting between Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Iranian Foreign Minister, and Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen. In this meeting held on Wednesday evening, the Special Envoy provided a report on the latest developments in Yemen and the political process to resolve the crisis in the country, mentioning the 'flexibility of all Yemeni groups' in the political process to resolve the crisis and describing Iran's role in negotiations between Yemeni groups as 'decisive.' The Iranian Foreign Minister reiterated the Islamic Republic's positions regarding 'establishing a ceasefire' and 'the success of the political process,' calling for the participation of all Yemeni groups in this process. Mr. Zarif emphasized that the 'catastrophic conditions in Yemen' must be stopped, adding that 'months of aggression and military approaches have brought no benefit other than destroying Yemen's infrastructure and killing and injuring innocent people in this country.'
