Release of Writings by Jawad Rouhi Who Recently Died; Account of His Abuse and Torture

Athena Daemi, a civil activist, has published parts of Jawad Rouhi's writings in which he recounts his abuse and torture. Jawad Rouhi was arrested in connection with the protests of 2022 in Mazandaran and was sentenced to three death penalties. After some time, he was transferred to a hospital in early September, and his death was suddenly announced. His death sparked a wave of protests. In part of these writings, Jawad Rouhi describes the torture he endured since his arrest to extract forced confessions. He revealed that he had a surgical scar on his lower back from 2021, which reopened after the torture during last year's detention. The writings of Jawad Rouhi were published one month after his suspicious death. In these writings, which were published for the first time by Athena Daemi, a human rights activist residing in Iran, he stated: 'As a result of the blows, my right leg has gone numb.' Athena Daemi tweeted about Jawad Rouhi's writings. Jawad Rouhi also spoke of the psychological torture he experienced. One month after the announcement of Jawad Rouhi's suspicious death, Iranian officials have still not disclosed the exact cause of his death. Human Rights Watch has called for the intervention of a UN fact-finding committee in the 'suspicious death case' of Jawad Rouhi. They also stated in a statement that Jawad Rouhi was severely tortured. It was previously reported that Jawad Rouhi was tortured by the intelligence of the IRGC in Sari and was held in solitary confinement for 40 days. Jawad Rouhi's brother, at the grave of this deceased protester, said: 'I remain silent for my mother.' Conflicting statements about the cause of Jawad Rouhi's death; they took a 'commitment' before handing over the body. A video attributed to Jawad Rouhi; his lawyer stated that he had only danced and burned a headscarf. Jawad Rouhi, a protester whose death sentence was annulled, died in prison; users are suspicious. The US described Jawad Rouhi's death as 'horrific' and the Iranian government's efforts as an attempt to 'instill fear' among the people of Iran.
