Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, and Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, held a bilateral meeting on Wednesday to discuss 'common military issues', 'the war in Ukraine', and 'Russia's support' for 'North Korea's space programs'. According to Reuters, during this meeting, Putin showcased 'Russia's space rocket launch base' and proposed sending a North Korean astronaut into space, while Kim Jong Un discussed missile development and the expansion of mutual military cooperation. Concurrently, during the negotiations, as the two leaders referred to each other as 'comrades', they attended a dinner with defense ministers, emphasizing their belief in Russia's victory over what they termed 'evil forces seeking hegemony'. While the United States and South Korea expressed concern about 'potential arms exchanges', Putin mentioned the expansion of 'military cooperation' without disclosing further details. He also referred to Kim Jong Un's plans to visit aviation sites and inspect the Russian fleet in the Pacific Ocean. Experts believe that this meeting, held amid the Ukraine war, is of great significance and allows Russia to challenge the United States, a key supporter of Ukraine. Additionally, this meeting reflects Russia's willingness to assist North Korea's satellite ambitions. However, António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, emphasized the importance of adhering to sanctions against North Korea. Washington and its allies have expressed concern over recent signs of closer military cooperation between nuclear-armed Russia and North Korea. This is Kim's first meeting with Putin since the onset of the Ukraine war. Despite denials from Pyongyang and Moscow, Washington claims that negotiations between the two countries for the delivery of North Korean weapons to Russia are progressing. Russia has consumed large reserves of its weapons during more than 18 months of war in Ukraine.
