Report by a Human Rights Organization on the Execution of Nearly 7,000 People in the Past 13 Years

The Kurdish human rights organization Kurdpa reported that 6,756 individuals have been executed in Iran by the Islamic Republic over the past 13 years. According to the report, 781 of these executions involved Kurdish citizens. Among the crimes leading to execution, 'drug-related offenses' accounted for over 48%, 'murder' for over 33%, and 'rape' for over 4%, respectively. The report emphasizes that during this period, 287 people were executed in public, and apart from the years 2012 and 2016, a total of 44 juvenile offenders have also been hanged in Iran. The report indicates that 183 of the executed individuals were women. Additionally, during this time, 195 political prisoners, ideological prisoners, and those charged with 'security' offenses were executed. On Friday, October 20, a number of United Nations experts, coinciding with the World Day Against the Death Penalty, expressed concern over the rising number of executions in Iran and called for an immediate halt to such actions. They noted in their statement that over 400 executions have been carried out this year in Iran and emphasized that the issuance of death sentences for drug-related crimes, adultery, homosexuality, and political and religious offenses reflects the arbitrary nature of these executions in the Islamic Republic. The Iran Human Rights Organization also reported on Thursday, October 19, in reference to World Day Against the Death Penalty (October 10), that the Islamic Republic executed 11 individuals in Qezel Hesar prison and one prisoner in Zahedan central prison, asserting that silence in the face of the statistic of one execution every five hours by the Islamic Republic is unacceptable. This human rights organization emphasized that with these executions, the total number of executions has increased to 531 since the beginning of this year. Shirin Ebadi, head of the Human Rights Defenders Center and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, stated that 'it does not matter who is the president, who is the head of the judiciary, and who are the representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly'; she wrote: 'The Islamic Republic's approach to all challenges and problems is nothing but physical elimination and repression, and year by year, the statistics of executions rise higher and higher because death is the true identity of the regime.' October 10 is designated as the World Day Against the Death Penalty. This day was first introduced and named in 2003 by the 'World Coalition Against the Death Penalty' to support the abolition of the death penalty and raise awareness about the conditions of prisoners sentenced to death.
