Reports Indicate Hamas has Provided a List of Hostages for Negotiation with Israel

The Hamas group has submitted a list of hostages it intends to release in the first phase of a potential ceasefire agreement with Israel, along with a list of Palestinian security prisoners it seeks to have freed from Israel. The Times of Israel, citing the London-based website "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed," reported that this list was provided by a source close to the negotiations. According to the report, Israel is reviewing the list and may send a delegation to Cairo today. Current negotiations are focused on a partial agreement in which categorized hostages deemed 'humanitarian' will be released in exchange for an extension of the ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners. The humanitarian category includes the elderly, children, women, sick hostages, and severely injured individuals. The report also states that Hamas, the militia group supported by the Islamic Republic, has proposed to release four hostages who are American citizens, some of whom do not fall under the 'humanitarian' category. The Times of Israel speculates that the proposal to release American hostages may be a response to a threat from the incoming U.S. President, Donald Trump, who stated that if the hostages were not freed before his inauguration, he would punish those responsible. Following the release of 105 hostages during a one-week ceasefire at the end of November 2023, negotiations for another agreement to secure the return of remaining hostages in Gaza had stalled for over a year. Reports indicate that the number of living hostages held by these groups is now less than 33, which had previously been discussed in past negotiations. However, Israel believes that 96 of the 251 hostages abducted on October 7 are still in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 34 individuals whose deaths have been confirmed by the Israeli army. Over the past 14 months, the Israeli Defense Forces have rescued eight hostages and recovered the bodies of 38 others. Israel's actions to block the arms smuggling route from Iran to Lebanon in Syria have been noted, with Netanyahu stating that Assad's fall is a result of Israel's attacks on the Iranian government and Hezbollah. Israeli attacks in Gaza coincide with discussions between Qatari officials and Trump's incoming administration. Israel also reported the killing of a commander of Hamas's air unit in Gaza.
